A little bit about Justin and Katie:
We are a husband and wife team who work together to create unique t-shirts and glitter vinyl handbags. Justin does the designing, burns the screens, and helps cut the vinyl and Katie does all the sewing, emailing, and helps with the actual printing of the tees. Katie also runs http://mutantangel.etsy.com, where she sells her embroidery and fabric purses.
What do you sell that would appeal to the guys?
We sell t-shirts with very guy-oriented designs- hot rods, custom cars, skulls, etc. Justin works at a hot rod/custom car shop in downtown Raleigh and used to be a tattoo artist, so the art of custom cars and tattoo flash influences his work.
Where do you sell your stuff?
We sell mainly on Etsy but also do local shows. We both have full-time “day jobs” as well, so we don’t currently run our own website. Maybe someday.
How long have you been in business?
Katie has been selling one thing or another online since she was 15. We started making custom tees about 2 years ago.
How did you get started?
We thought, “Hey. That looks like fun!” and just did it.
How do you get the word out about your shop?
We have to be honest and say we don’t do a lot of advertising. The best advertising is word of mouth, so we always try to be kind and cool with our customers so they will recommend us!
What’s your creative process?
We are inspired by lowbrow art and custom cars, which we live and work with everyday. We make things that we would want to wear and use, and we actually do wear and use our own work. We don’t consider ourselves “artists,” just people out to have a good time and make cool stuff.
What do you want people to know about your work?
Since we are a husband and wife team, we are extra hard on each other and want to make everything perfect. Making stuff makes us happy, and we want other people to be happy with our work too!
